Acknowledgements/Credits
Many of the programs and publications on this CD-ROM disc were originally intended to run from floppy or hard drives and have built in bookmarks. Of course, a CD-ROM disc is a read-only device, so it can't record a bookmark. If you run one of the bookmarked books directly from the CD-ROM disc, then an error message will be sent when the book tries to record the bookmark. Ignore the error message.
Things change very rapidly on the Internet, so some of the links in this listing may be out of date. When you encounter a bad link, you might try searching for the book, program, or subject via a search engine. We find GOOGLE to be useful in such cases.
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the world of electronic publishing. This disc is a compilation of material from the early years of computer-distributed text. Although it contains works which range from the blue collar staples of romances and westerns to the highbrows of Shakespeare and poetry, most of the books here fall into the solid middle ground.
This disc contains a variety of shareware electronic books, a collection of how-to publications for writers, a large group of shareware programs for writers and publishers, plus selected files and programs from The Digital Publishing Association library on Genie.
You get over 20 novels, 25 non-fiction books, 6 reference works, several short story collections, dozens of programs for writers, plus 30 magazines, poetry, information files, Internet URLs, and more.
This material has been assembles so that readers and writers will have easy access to a wide variety of resources related to electronic publishing.
A Very Brief History
In the beginning was the word, and the word was in ASCII. The earliest disk-based forms were ASCII text files which were displayed by batch files of DOS's TYPE command. Aaron Shepherd's collection of children's' stories is an example of this type of publication. At this same time, a few bulletin board systems (BBS) were developed to present literary creations. Jake Hargrove was an early pioneer in this field (BBS: 505-865-4082.) File browsers, such as Vernon Buerg's LIST.COM and similar programs, came next. They enabled writers to conveniently present text using the PG DN and PG UP keys. Simple hypertext implementations of the "List-class" of programs emerged shortly thereafter. HyperSee is just one of a large number of programs of this type. Complex hypertext with links to sound and graphics files rapidly followed. Some of these programs were not intended as electronic books, rather, their raison de etre was the convenient display of on-disk manuals for programs. True electronic books, however, became available at about the same time. Programming pioneers like Ted Husted, Jeff Napier, and Bill Kavanaugh clearly intended their programs to be engines for electronic books. When Windows began to replace DOS, interest in Windows-like presentations increased, and the result was the type of multimedia that is common today: hypertext mixed with sound, graphics, animation, and video.
Shareware, Freeware, and other types of publications.
This disc contains a variety of types of publications. Many are shareware, and some of these have distribution of use limits. Others are public domain publications. There are no restrictions on what you can do with public domain files. You can copy, edit, alter, and distribute them in any way you desire. The shareware and freeware publications and programs are copyrighted programs with restrictions which vary from program to program. Shareware programs are usually offered on a "try-before-you-buy" basis. You are allowed to use the program on a trial basis, and if the program meets your needs, then you are obligated to pay the author a registration fee. Fees can be as low as the $2.00 per book charge for Mack Tanner Books, or as high as $100.00. Complete information on fees will be found with each shareware publication or program. Freeware programs are like shareware programs--they may have distribution restrictions, but there is no fees charged for the use of the program.
How to use these programs and publications
In most cases, the programs and publications in the subdirectories are in uncompressed, ready-to-use format. In a few cases, they are in "ZIP" file format--they have names like filename.zip--and you will need a program like WINZIP to uncompress the files. (An unzip utility will be found in the BONUS4 subdirectory.)
Most of the programs are DOS-based and will run best from the DOS window in Windows. (In many cases you can run them from Windows' run command line, but this sometimes results in quirks, especially if the publication uses a built-in bookmark.)
Look for a BEGIN.BAT, START.BAT, or filename.EXE to open a publication. If there is a README.TXT, READTHIS, or similar file, start there because such files usually contain information on how to run and use a program.

AMATEURS NEED NOT APPLY
[ Detective Novel ]
This is not your usual detective novel. it would best be described as an adult burlesque dramedy--a dramatic or literary work which seeks to ridicule by means of comic immitation or grotesque exaggeration. HotDog is an HTML editor for Windows. It helps you maintain and
create documents for the World Wide Web. HotDog makes life
simple for you by providing quick access to tags and attributes
and dialogs to help you create complex elements. It also uses a
Windows 95-style graphical interface, even if you don't have
Windows 95! HotDog is _not_ a WYSIWYG, desktop publishing-style
editor (but it may become one at a later date). HotDog does not
require any word processing software to run. HotDog supports
HTML 3 and NetScape revisions. Note that some of the HTML 3
elements are not yet supported by the NetScape Navigator. See
the help file for more details.

When combined, these two freeware ZIP utilities allow you
greater flexibility in compressing your publications for
distribution. ZCRYP20X includes ZIPCLOAK.EXE which lets
you selectively encrypt specific files in a zipped file.
UNZ50P1 is a freeware unzipper that works with "cloaked"
files. It also lets you unzip those nasty zips that happen
to contain files having long filenames created with Window95
or with the Unix and Macintosh operating systems. For example,
a Windows95 Word document might be called MYFILE.DOC.DOC.DOC.
PKzip v2.04g cannot unzip this file on a DOS machine, but the
UNZ50P1 unzipper can do it!
