Dear Jack,
After 25 years of viewing, I have lost my interest in X-rated video. I just got a new DVD entertainment center. What an I going to do? I'm only 42.

Desperate viewer

Dear Desperate,

A few years ago the Christian Right and their Republican friends were all in a dither about pornographic materials on the Internet, and they passed all sorts of restrictive laws. They needn't have bothered. Pornography, it turns out, is a self-collapsing phenomenon.

Starting in the nineteen-eighties, more and more porn stars were getting themselves surgically altered to give themselves extreme buxomness. It became de rigeur so that almost no one in the business was not so enhanced.

During the days of analog signals and VCR tapes these silicon sirens were acceptable. Picture qualities were low and the views were fuzzy, but the qualities were better than the 8mm films of the nineteen-fifties. Besides, some of those gals looked pretty good. Nina Hartley, for example, had a great bod.

However, the digital revolution made analog obsolete, and, as you noted, DVDs are replacing VCRs. As a consequence, images are of much higher in quality than were ever possible before. People were starting to notice that those silicon sisters were more like cartoons than anything else. With high-resolution imaging, you could now see that those gigantic boobs didn't hang right, didn't move right, and you could even see where the flesh stopped and the silicon began. In short, those babes didn't look good anymore. Digital put a magnifying glass on them, and the higher the picture quality, the less sexy the gals looked. They were a freak show! Imaging hardware will keep getting better, and porn will just look more and more tawdry. It's become grotesque. It's not fun any more. Eventually, everyone will get bored with the whole thing and it will fade away.

So, Desperate Viewer, there is nothing wrong with you. You are merely a victim of the advanced technology that is destroying porn.

You can go out and try to rescue your VCR and tapes from the trash, but they are probably already on their way to the landfill. All may not be lost, however, There were a few porn stars who resisted the pressure to go under the surgeon's knife. Some of these all-natural women are starting to show up on DVDs.(*) As an anodyne to excessive silicon, you may want to look for material such as Flat-chested Babes of XXX. Also, check out the work of Lana Sands or Kamry Woods.

* CAVEAT: If the DVDs are merely copied from old VCR tapes, then the quality would remain low. I have not actually seen any of this material, so it is always caveat emptor!
